Cosplay

In 2016 I was invited to Dragon Con by my dear friend Erin, and the rest is history. Or rather, the rest is a blur of falling in love with creating costumes, finding amazing friends through this community, learning many new creative art forms and storytelling through my cosplay and photography.

Cosplay is “costume play”, and takes many forms but two things key things to know are:
1. Cosplay is for everyone and
2. Cosplay takes many forms, and there is no one “right way” to cosplay

The majority of my cosplays are original characters or my versions of characters I love in books, shows, and movies. I most enjoy cosplaying by thrifting, upcycling, and altering the parts of my costumes, but I will also buy, reuse, or sew from scratch some of my cosplay closet pieces now that I have developed more skills. I have learned to sew, use patterns, and problem solve in so many areas thanks to cosplay, and it is always teaching me new artistic skills. I love to integrate my photography to tell my character’s and other’s stories and also often integrate poetry or writing to do so. By far the greatest reward in my cosplay journey have been the friends I have made and the experiences I have had as we create and have adventures. My cosplay journey has been one of healing, and cosplay has gotten me through some of the hardest times in my life. I hope that participating in it or seeing my art brings joy to others, as well.

Here I share some of my cosplays, and if you would like to read more in depth about the events and creative projects I wear them for, you can check out my blog under the stories tab, or peruse my instagram @mothpricess.art.
